Following Harriet

Following Harriet

Following Harriet is a podcast that takes a closer look at the life of one of the bravest and most extraordinary women in our country’s history. It also puts Harriet in a broader context, examining the 19th Century experience of African Americans, especially in Virginia. It’s tied to the Focus Features film Harriet, and the film’s director Kasi Lemmons, Grammy-winner Rhiannon Giddens and a dozen of the country’s top historians are featured.

Getnet Marsha, who grew up in Ethiopia, is good at what he does. His work is his craft. He’s immensely proud of his 20-step shining process, which includes massaging the shoes like knotted muscles. He’s a talker. He tells shoeshine stories like he’s a veteran slugger recounting rookie-year highlights.

Little G Weevil is a Hungarian-born Blues musician living in Atlanta’s suburban sprawl. When he talks, you know he had to come from Budapest. But when he sings, it’s like he’s stepping right off of Beale Street in Memphis.

GAY MARRIAGE, Black Voters & Obama

A solid majority of the North Carolina’s African-American voters approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage as heterosexual. The very next day, President Obama publicly endorsed same-sex marriage. How did that affect black support of the president?
